Results are consistent with studies of hydrophobic thickness (Piknova et al. 1993, Dumas et al. 1999) and site-directed spin labeling of bacteriorhodopsin (Altenbach et al. 1990, 1994, Greenhalgh et al. 1991) under conditions when the protein is monomeric.
